Can Women Still Be Considered A Minority

Can women still be considered a minority? While looking into business grants recently, I was asked, “Why are women a minority?” My answer was that it is “obviously” not based on demographic disadvantage, but attitudinal. Since the feminist movement, women have made great strides in professional equality. Their salaries are becoming more comparable. Their management opportunities are becoming more comparable.   Their educational levels are more comparable. Regardless, speaking as the youngest daughter with two much older big brothers, I was not taught that the world is my oyster. The main message that I took from Catholic grade school was to be meek and humble. I took this to heart when people teased me. My brothers were encouraging me to fight back, but that seemed like something boys do; a good little girl should just absorb it, it seemed, or ignore it, which a sensitive girl just can’t seem to do. It seems that a major component of my professional and personal growth through the years actually depends on UNLEARNING to be meek and humble, and yet still accept myself as a “good girl.” As a teenager I really related to the No Doubt song “Just A Girl.” My brothers were given many more freedoms. They easily found jobs at 14. With work permit in hand, I applied to practically every food vendor in the mall. I finally was given a job (through my network, even though I would’ve told you that I didn’t have one) at Orange Julius at just shy of 16. Sure, I’d done babysitting, but only while my uncle was home. To be honest, I really didn’t know how to entertain kids; it wasn’t my talent, but it was the only work available to me. Even neighborhood raking and shoveling went to the strapping teenage boys. Gabby Reese is out there promoting/defending her book, My Foot is Too Big for the Glass Slipper: A Guide to the Less than Perfect Life, in which she admits that, though she is a strong female, the best way to make her household and marriage run smoothly is to assume the submissive role. Meanwhile, Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg, points out in her book, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead, that these gender role stereotypes and adopted self-images are what keep women out of the board room and C-level positions. 15-20% of companies have women in C-level positions. This is the major reason that women remain a minority business owner. Now, the best we can do for each other is to help one another reach for BIG goals, rather than settling for what we can squeeze out of our career with all of our other responsibilities. If you have ideas on how we can do this, please share a comment. In the meantime, I will be following more women on how to have it all and, as usual, I will keep you apprised of what I learn. UNVEIL YOUR BRILLIANCE! One comment on “Can women still be considered a minority?” I would suggest, Women spend sometime reeducating men in the necessity of reevaluating an archaic malevolent male hierarchy. Change never comes from within too the extent of equality of bought parts. Equalities essence is abdication of unfair privilege in undemocratic process. Ultrasound is utilized to take estimations of muscles and make a model for muscle exhaustion through the signs it gets. We have to realize how to organize the data and the ultrasound, which will give us data on when to go from electromyography to useful electrical incitement [of the muscles], says Sharma, who is likewise chief of the Project Neuromuscular Control and Robotics Laboratory. The secret to giving strong interview answers- Hays careers advice Viewpoint careers advice blog

The secret to giving strong interview answers- Hays careers advice Have you ever wanted an opportunity so much, that during your interview answers, you ended up listing every single reason why you were the most suitable candidate for the job, shoehorning in points which weren’t even relevant to the question? This is common trap that many candidates fall into, especially when they are feeling particularly nervous. During my years in recruitment, I have found the STAR technique to be very useful in helping candidates provide structured and engaging interview answers. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result, and forces you to stick to a framework, whilst providing all of the most relevant information in your answer. The STAR technique in practice Many interview questions, particularly competency based ones, are designed to gather evidence of the skills a candidate claims to have. As such, the STAR technique is an excellent method of providing this information to the interviewer without going off on a tangent. For instance: “You mention here on your CV that you have excellent verbal communication skills. Can you describe a time these skills were put to the test?” S: Describe the situation and set the scene Firstly, set the scene so that the interviewer can understand why your skills were needed in this situation: “During my time at X, we launched a brand new product. This product was going to be pitched to the Marketing Director of one of our clients.” T: Explain the task you undertook  in this situation Next explain your task or role in this situation, and how your skills were put to the test. “As the appointed Sales Executive for this product, I was asked to present this pitch. My presentation needed to communicate the unique selling points of this product, and how it would be beneficial to the business. On the morning of the presentation, I was informed that two of our client’s sales directors wanted to sit in on this presentation too.” A: Describe the action you took   Now explain what action you took during this task, and how this action involved your skills. “Therefore, I adapted my communication style so that I was addressing multiple people in the room. I also tweaked some of the language used during the presentation, avoiding some of the jargon, so that my presentation made sense to both marketing and sales professionals.” R: Showcase the results of the action Next, talk about the outcomes of your action, and how your skills created a positive result. “As a result of the successful pitch, I secured an initial order for this product, which increased our monthly revenue by 25 per cent. In addition, my presentation generated some great feedback from the two additional sales directors in particular.” Why the STAR technique works By following the STAR technique giving answers to interview questions, you prevent yourself from going off topic. Adhering to this technique will also ensure that you structure your answer in a way that tells a story to the interviewer, keeping them interested. Furthermore, the STAR technique encourages you to focus your mind on the question you have been asked, and ensures each part of your answer is significant and informative. This makes for a much more satisfactory answer for the interviewer. Lastly, by practicing this technique and preparing a few scenarios prior to the interview, you will boost your own confidence, by reminding yourself of your unique skill set and all the successes you have achieved so far in your career. So, ahead of the interview, familiarise yourself with both your CV, and the types of interview questions you are likely to be asked.  Practice your interview answers, sticking to the STAR technique. Once you are in the interview room, keep this structure in the front of your mind. This will allow you to answer each question fully without rambling, whilst showcasing your suitability for the role. The 9 Fastest Ways To Be Awesome At Your Craft

The 9 Fastest Ways To Be Awesome At Your Craft The 9 Fastest Ways To Be Awesome At Your Craft Listen to Podcast Now: Listen in iTunes Download Audio File For those who want to be truly awesome at what “they do,” I’m going to give you my formula for accelerating your career or your life or whatever you want to catapult. Here are the 9 fastest ways to be awesome at your craft based on what I’ve seen works! Below are the highlights from the podcast. For a more complete explanation of each area, listen here. It’s also available on any major podcast platform. First, I’m going to assume you actually want to practice your craft. It sounds silly, but most people who reach out to me are miserable, stuck, or a host of other undesirable feelings. Let’s assume you chose your path correctly. If you haven’t, check out the First Thing To Do When You Want To Change Careers before proceeding. Let’s roll… Adjust your attitude. Optimism is something you manufacture from your attitude. Inspiration is something someone else manufactures from your optimism. Your ability to think without limits will help you create those incredible achievements. It’s also what will inspire the others around. See Unlock Your True Potential With These Three Keys. Identify the most important capabilities. If you simply practice the “how to” do something, you won’t be able to reach the truly elevated heights. Everyone has purchased the “How To Manual.” You need to know what makes the greatest the greatest. Example: Don’t just learn how to sell. Learn psychology. Learn storytelling. Know the sequence people need to hear things so they can understand how your product or service with help them. Be sincere. Build a Franken-Mentor. I don’t think any one person, as a mentor, will help you reach phenomenal heights. Build yourself a collection of peopleâ€"live or onlineâ€"who can help you build your capabilities. I study four people (Burchard, Walker, Hyatt, McLaren). They help me with high performance, product launching, personal platform building, and membership site management respectively. None of these people do anything related to career management or hiring (my areas of expertise). They support the capabilities I need to learn and master. Train like heck. See the four gents I mentioned above? I’ve spent nearly 500 hours over the past two years studying their material. That’s purchasing their training material, watching and studying it, reviewing their blogs, and so forth. If you use the 2,000 work hours per year rule of thumb (for the average 9-to-5-er), that’s an additional 12.5% training I added to ensure I know what I’m doing. Practice. Perfectly. You will make permanent what you practice. Make sure you know what makes something perfect before you make it permanent. There are two ways to go wrong here. First, you can practice poorly. Second, you can practice the wrong things. Choose (or find) the best people to be around. You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Choose wisely. I’m speaking about actual live people who you see and exchange ideas and banter. Spend lots of time with Google and YouTube. There is absolutely no excuse why you can’t learn something you want to know. I had no idea how to set up a podcast. I had no idea how to use a DSLR camera before I needed to use one. I knew nothing about lighting. I knew nothing about email marketing. The point isn’t, “I’m great.” The point is, I knew nothing! Get the right tools. There are so many tools to help you become awesome! They can be organizational tools, research tools, and so on. I recorded this podcast away from office using a cool Sennheiser ClipMic Digital (powered by Apogee) microphone connected directly to my iPhone. It was a new toy I found by accident because I was Googling and YouTubing ways to hook up my Sennheiser Lavalier Microphone. Now I can record these little beauties on the road! It’s also awesome for getting fantastic quality when you’re live on Facebook. Listen: Listen to the world. Listen to your customers. Don’t ever listen to your competition unless you want to create the same products or services they’re creating. Your greatest opportunities will be found in the sounds of other peoples complaints. Solve their problems and youre their hero. As always, I’d love to hear from you: What are your greatest tricks or steps to becoming awesome? 5 of the most exclusive golf courses in the world

5 of the most exclusive golf courses in the world 5 of the World’s Most Exclusive Golf Courses The  great golfing legend  Jack Nicklaus offered a useful perspective on the most exclusive golf courses when he remarked: “Ask yourself how many shots you would have saved if you never lost your temper, never got down on yourself, always developed a strategy before you hit, and always within your own capabilities.”Nicklauss  implicit lesson is that the quality of the golf depends as much on temperament as it does on whether you are playing on one of the most exclusive golf courses or a humble municipal course. Its beyond doubt that the kinds of lessons Nicklaus  claimed are there for the taking  in golf make the sport such a big draw among entrepreneurs and high achievers. But golf has phenomenal popular appeal too, and major economic impact. In the UK alone in 2016, the golf industry paid  some £1bn in tax, while UK golfers spent a total of £4bn on the sport. The worldwide spend is phenomenal, with an unrelenting demand for everything from golf clubs to  umbrellas; from  polo s hirts to  balls and  gloves. While elite level golf has an elite, exclusive price tag too, it’s a price that anyone with more than a passing interest in the game is prepared to pay. For enthusiasts, golf is a zen state of mind, and the world’s most exclusive golf  courses are the ultimate zen temples. Here are 5 of the  most exclusive golf courses in the world â€" they vary in their respective climatic conditions, scenery, and green fees, but for golfers, and the kinds of lessons Nicklaus says the game can teach us, they’re a character-building investment. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 1. The Green Monkey, Sandy Lane, Barbados (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); IMAGE SOURCE: SANDYLANE.COMSituated  on the glittering west coast of Barbados, Sandy Lane, famous as a getaway for the rich and famous, boasts three golf courses.  Among them is the one that every golfer in the world would like to play a round onâ€"The Green Monkey, created by celebr ated course designer Tom Fazio.  However, golf at The Green Monkey is an ultra exclusive experience, and comes only as part of a package for guests staying at the resort. According to Investopedia, the most inexpensive suite at the resort costs $1,000/€875/ £690 per day, with average green fees of $240/€210/ £165. It’s likely that for the vast majority of golfers, a round at The Green Monkey will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.2. Shadow Creek, Las Vegas, Nevada, USIMAGE SOURCE: SHADOW CREEKLike  The Green Monkey, Shadow Creek  is so exclusive that cameras are not allowed on the course. This is unsurprising, given that the fairways and greens are traversed by a veritable whos-who of CEOs, celebrities, and, it’s rumoured, US Presidents and other world leaders.  Here is a pretty good insider’s eye-view of the course, howeverâ€"the club’s general manager, PGA professional Mark Brennerman  gives ‘Golf Guru’ Dennis Silvers the lowdown on his favourite holes on the cour se, as well as details of some of the famous patrons who’ve played  Shadow Creek over the years.VIDEO SOURCE: YOUTUBEHowever, the good news is that there  is a way for non-celebs to play the course, if youre prepared to pay. The green fees cost a not entirely out of the question $500/€437/ £345, which will buy you one of only  the first two or  final two tee times of the day;  limousine service to and from the club (you cannot simply drive up and casually walk into the clubhouse); and a caddy. Shadow Creek, originally opened in 1989  in what was once the wilderness  of the Mojave Desert on the outskirts of Las Vegas, is now snugly  engirdled by the city’s suburban growth. But its exclusivity is almost unparalleled,  offering a truly special experience  for anyone with more than a passing interest in golf. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 3.  Old Head Golf Links, County Cork, IrelandVIDEO SOURCE: YOUTUBEOne  of Ireland’s golfing jewels, Old Head was designe d by Ron Kirby, Robert Trent Jones, and Jack Nicklaus. Its fairways and greens, situated close to and occasionally bringing into play the stunning cliffs and rugged Atlantic coastline, are exposed to gusts and breezes that amplify and already stiff challenge to even the world’s greatest golfers. Eighteen holes at Old Head in 2016 costs €160/ £126/$182 during low season, and €240/ £189/$274 at peak, and there is a flat year-round fee for rental of carts (€60/ £47/$68) and clubs (€45/ £35/$51). Caddy fees range from €35/ £27/$39 to €50/ £39/$57 per bag. Definitely one of the most exclusive and special rounds of golf available anywhere in Europe.4. Trump Turnberry Resort, Ayrshire, ScotlandIMAGE SOURCE:  GOLFCOURSEARCHITECTURE.COMTurnberry  has a mythical place in the hearts of golfers. It’s regarded as the birthplace of golf, and became a general household name after the epic 1997 Open Championship battle between golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, forever after known as ‘The Duel in the Sun’.VIDEO SOURCE: YOUTUBEEncompassing  three courses, The Ailsa,  The Kintyre and The Arran, situated on the Firth of Clyde, the Turnberry resort was purchased in 2014 by Donald J Trump  (now President of the US) and there have been significant tweaks and improvements to the course and its facilities ahead of the Open Championship in June 2016. Although details of green fees are not available on the resort’s website, Investopedia has reported  that  a  round on the famed ‘Duel in the Sun’ Ailsa course costs around $325/ £224/€284. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 5.  Pebble Beach Golf Links, California, USIMAGE SOURCE: PEBBLE BEACH GOLF LINKSPebble Beach Resorts, encompassing 5,300 acres of coastal lands between Carmel and Monterey in California, and five golf resorts, including Pebble Beach Golf Links, which most famously hosts the US Open.  Interestingly, though, notwithstanding such elite cache, the Links  course is  open to the public. So, if golfing is your thing, it’s likely that Pebble Beach Golf Links will be a must-play. A round of golf at the Links costs $495/€433/ £341 $630/€551/ £434 (the upper limit including the green fee, and optional caddie fee of $80/€70/ £55 with suggested $35/€30/ £24 to $55/€48/ £37 gratuity). But for the true golfing fans, the asking price is well worth it. Here’s an appetite-whetting taster, as Chuck Dunbar, PGA Professional at the course, analyses the tricky par 3 seventh hole.IMAGE SOURCE:  PGA TOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL

From Target to Walmart What Retailer Has the Best Leaders

From Target to Walmart What Retailer Has the Best Leaders The retail world is so heavily reliant on the trends and tastes of its consumers. And this constant need to adapt to the times provides implications for many important business factors, especially their employer brand. This is because as demand grows for their products, so does the need to hire the best talent in the market. And when youre talking about the top 10 US retail companies, from the likes of Target all the way to Walmart, more often than not, there are more jobs available than candidates! So retail companies have to be shrewd in their approach and find ways to differentiate themselves from competitors. One key aspect of this is through their Management Organization. The employee culture and overall employer brand within any retail store lives and dies by their managers. It is the Management Organization that set the standards. A good retail manager wears many hats and has to be able to not only run the store efficiently but also to keep staff motivated, maintain employee schedules, enforce company policies and much, much more. So, using our proprietary methodology, the Employer Brand Index, we wanted to generate our own understanding of the impact of Management Organization, one of our 16 employer brand attributes, within the US retail industry. Click here for full report with company breakdowns, thematic analysis and more. How do people generally really feel about their managers? A large portion of the data (20%) tended to be very general, with comments such as ‘bad management’ or ‘good management’ coming up quite often. And extracting meaning out of these generalities can be difficult because the word good or bad can constitute so many different things. Yet, in the case of this research, it actually helped paint a picture as to how competent people feel their managers and leaders are at the company. Below are the most common descriptors: As visualized above, the word ‘poor’ was the most commonly used description, and if you were to analyze the ratio of sentiment for this topic as a whole, it would be 66% negative and 34% positive. And as the report shows, from the fifth-placed Home Depot to the tenth-placed Walmart, negative commentary surrounding the theme Ability, Knowledge Competency had the highest or one of the highest shares of voice within their respective data sets. This not only emphasizes the impact of poor management or inadequate leadership on their poor scoring within this research but their overall employer brand and talent retention! Manager’s dont care about employees This is a pretty strong statement, but our research methodology is driven by what people say and we convey what they say as bluntly as possible. And the theme Treatment, Behavior Appreciation as a whole had a very strong negative impact on the scores for Walmart, Target, Dollar General and more. A major part of this was the lack of care and appreciation employees felt they received from managers. Kate Pritchard, Head of Insights at Link Humans, had some very interesting thoughts about this issue: “Managers in the retail industry have a difficult job, working in highly operational roles, often with a flexible workforce who could be working different shift patterns to them. This makes it even more important to get the fundamentals of management right: treating employees fairly and with respect, being available to offer support and recognize great work. Small changes in the way managers interact with employees can have a large impact on their experience at work. On the whole, this theme made up almost 20% of the entire data pool for this research, which shows how important it is for people to be recognized, appreciated and cared about by their managers. Favoritism is a norm Examining the data we did notice the importance of friendship and team culture for each of these retail organizations, but it seems as though, more often than not, these friendships have boiled into favoritism. The research shows that 8 out of the 10 companies had significant issues with the theme Favoritism, Fairness Politics. The words ‘favoritism’ or ‘favorites’ came up often and some of the issues pertinent to this were: Better schedules are given to friends family Promotions are given to friends family Management boys clubs in the workplace Managers driving their own personal agendas This type of inequality can be hard to control for retail organizations the size of Walmart and Target, who put their trust into thousands of managers and supervisors across the country. Yet it is an issue that needs to be focused on, because allowing this type of behavior will have serious implications on any organizations employer brand, especially in regards to talent retention because the best people will not be fairly selected for the role and those that see this happen will ultimately lose trust in the organization. As the common saying goes ‘People Leave Managers, Not Companies’. And while this blanket statement isnt always true, it feels extremely fitting for the retail industry. The graphic below is a summary of how each scored on our 1 to 10 scale. Remember: 1 is a perfect score and 10 is the worst possible score. The commentary you will find on the right-hand side of the graphic are examples of the most common themes and subjects.
